Cure Of Thyroid Colloidal Cyst with Homeopathy: A case report

Abstract: Thyroid colloidal cyst is not uncommon. Palpable thyroid nodules occur in 4 to 7 percent of the population, but nodules found incidentally on ultrasonography suggest a prevalence of 19 to 67 percent. Allopathically, such cases are advised to remove the cyst surgically. In the present case of thyroid colloidal cyst, the patient was advised surgical removal. The present case shows that the Homoeopathic medicine, chosen on the basis of individualization, helps in the treatment of seemingly untreatable cases like Thyroid Colloidal Cyst.

Introduction: A thyroid nodule is an unusual growth (lump) of thyroid cells in the thyroid gland. The thyroid is part of the endocrine system, which is made up of glands that secrete various hormones into the bloodstream. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ (or gland) that is located on the front of the neck, just under Adam’s apple (larynx). The thyroid gland, which is made up of the right and left lobes connected to the isthmus (or “bridge), produces and releases thyroid hormones. Colloid are one or more overgrowths of normal thyroid tissue. These growths are benign (not cancer). They may grow large, but they do not spread beyond the thyroid gland.

Clinical feature: Some patients have a thyroid nodule and not have any noticeable symptoms. But if the nodule gets large enough, patients may develop:

  • an enlarged thyroid gland, known as a goiter
  • pain at the base of neck
  • swallowing difficulties
  • breathing difficulties
  • hoarse voice [2]

Presentation of the case: a 54-year-old previously healthy man, presented with

  1. A lump in neck since 1.5 years: Patient noticed a big lump of about 2 cm diameter in neck, suddenly. That was located in slightly left side of base neck. The lump moved with swallowing.

Treatment: On the basis of repertorisation, patient was given Natrum mur 200/1 dose

Plan: to give medicine on the basis of repertorial totality.

Follow up: Patient continued to report decrease in size of lump and the second image below was again taken 3 months after starting treatment.

Discussion: There are very few published case reports and studies in the homeopathic treatment of Thyroid Cyst. Many thyroid cysts are silent which may be the reason of physicians not able to individualize the case and give medicine. Also many patients opt for surgery fearing malignancy arising out of it in future.

Thyroid cysts can cause complications like problems in swallowing or breathing, hyperthyroidism and Problems related to thyroid nodule surgery (like to take thyroid hormone replacement therapy for the rest of your life) This leaves a very few cases for homeopathic treatment of Thyroid cysts. The patient is still on follow up and there has been no recurrence of complaints.

About this case, upon further study of the medicine Natrum mur – it is found that Natrum mur is found useful in various studies done for thyroid glands, though there are very few cases of thyroid cysts.

Conclusion: Medical treatment of thyroid cysts is difficult, same is true for homeopathic treatment. Natrum mur worked for this case and is found to be helpful in various thyroid related diseases like hypothyroidism, hyperthyroididm etc. Future researchers are advised to study action of Natrum mur in thyroid cyst cases.
