Seborrheic Dermatitis is an Inflammatory disorder of skin characterized by redness and scaling over areas rich in sebaceous glands – scalp, face, chest, back and flexural areas(folds) and affected skin is covered by yellow brown scales and crusts. Disease varies from mild to severe. Candida infections are also found to be associated in many cases of Seborrheic Dermatitis.
Symptoms (Children)
- Crown of head covered with oily looking, thick, fissured crust (cradle crap)
- On face- forehead, eyebrows, eyelids, nasolabial folds(lower part of nose around nostrils)
- Redness, small boils and thin branny or thick yellow brown scales present in these areas and thick greasy crusts
Symptoms (Adults)
- Yellow colored, mild to severe redness, oily thick scales and crusts
- Associated with seborrhea, scaling and mild redness and often itching of scalp, eyebrows, nasolabial folds (around nose) and behind ears areas as well as sternum and shoulder blade
- Classically well known disease with chronic recurrent lesions
- Predilection for scalp, temples, retroauricular folds (behind ears), external ear canals, inner part of eyebrows, glabella with nasolabial folds(around nose area) and V-areas of chest and back
- Less frequently- intertriginous areas such as sides of neck, axillae, inframammary regions, umbilicus and genitocrural folds
Management:
- Keep the affected area clean and dry, as if is prone for developing Candida infections
- Don’t put oil in scalp, if the scalp is oily.
- Do not try to scrub away the lesion, as it increases chances of secondary bacterial infection.
Homeopathic Treatment: Homeopathic medicines offer sure, gentle, faster and long lasting treatment of Seborrheic Dermatitis. Some of the commonly used homeopathic medicines are:
- Sanicula: This medicine is useful in Seborrheic Dermatitis having profuse scaly dandruff with falling of hair.
- Thuja occidentalis : This medicine is useful in Seborrheic Dermatitis cases having greasy or dry hair, like straw and they stick together. There is profuse white scaly dandruff and eczema of ear. Skin is very greasy.
- Natrum Mur: In cases of extreme Seborrheic Dermatitis, where there is falling of whiskers and beard, this medicine is very useful. The skin of the patient is pale, muddy and shiny, as if greased
- Graphites: In cases of Seborrheic Dermatitis having eczema capitis and scalp is very sore to touch. The Skin of such patients is dry, rough, and irritable, that breaks easily and exudates a gluey moisture, more common in folds.
- Phosphorus: In cases of Seborrheic Dermatitis having copious dandruff and Falling of bunches of hair in large spots, this medicine is very helpful. They also have severe Itching in scalp.
